My family is stuck in Chicago until FRIDAY (MAJOR FLIGHT DELAY)?
I have extended family that live in the Los Angeles area and they were visiting family in New York for Christmas. They were originally supposed to fly out of Newark nonstop to LA on Sunday, but with the snow and all, they had to rebook. They ended up having to take a flight LaGuardia to Chicago O'Hare, then from O'Hare to either Dalls/Ft. Worth or Houston (can't remember which) and finally from Texas to LA. Well, their flight to Chicago went fine, but their plane from Chicago to Texas had a cracked windshield. The part I can't believe is that they cannot get on another flight until Friday. They are sending their oldest kid back by herself tomorrow (they paid extra) because her boyfriend flew in from Kentucky to visit yesterday, but the airline is only giving them a free flight on Friday. The of course are getting a free stay at a DoubleTree suite plus an extra $500 for meals, but why Friday? Is this because their frequent flyer miles are only available for certain flights? I live in Omaha, and we don't usually have big problems at our airport like this. I'm just trying to figure out why they can't get out until Friday. Can ANYONE shed some light on this?

It is simply because of the HUGE number of flights canceled and the HUGE number of people that need to get new flights. Perhaps the airline gave Them a reason, but I doubt it could e anything other than just the long line ahead of them.

With high numbers of flight cancellations, come limited availability of airline seats for the days immediately following such cancellations. So, I think it is fair to say that they have just be caught out by the fact that there are/were many more ahead of them, and also being a family group, the airlines may have difficulty accommodating them together and if there are minors involved that further restricts their options.

The airline would move them along as soon as possible if they could. They don't get any pleasure from incurring the cost of their room and board. It's just a bad time for travel due to mother nature. Hope they can enjoy the new year at least, and their time in TX. Cracked windshield. Scary!

My sympathies. Sorry to hear this. Short of buying new tickets with their own money, there does not seem to be any other option other than going with the airlines' arrangements. Rebooking is not pleasant for passengers or the airlines.
